Dr Shelly Newstead
Managing Director

Dr Shelly Newstead created the PARS playwork model as part of her doctoral research at the UCL Institute of Education, London, and has been appointed as an Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University, Brisbane Australia. Shelly has worked in the playwork field for nearly thirty years as a practitioner, trainer, author, editor, publisher and researcher. She is the Series Editor for Advances in Playwork Research (Routledge) and the Managing Editor of International Journal of Playwork Practice. She is also currently the President of the International Council for Children’s Play (ICCP) and her research interests include the history of playwork and the development of empirical evidence about playwork practice. Shelly is also the author of the popular Busker’s Guide to Playwork which has sold over 12,000 copies worldwide and is now also available in Japanese.
Karen Clarke
PA to Shelly

Karen has worked in various administrative, financial, and P.A roles, since leaving school, and has also spent the last 21 years as a holistic therapist. She is excited to be part of the team: ‘I think it is especially important to connect with/support children, in all areas of their lives. In the past I have been a Youth Club helper and leader; a volunteer with Norfolk Parent Partnership (assisting parents of children with SEN); a Massage In Schools Instructor (trained with MISP); had lots of fun reading my two rhyming story books to children, in schools and at events, throughout Norfolk & Suffolk.’
Fen Harrison
Training Manager

Fen is the Training Manager for Common Threads, responsible for all course administration. She graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Bath University in 2001 and has since held many positions in a range of sectors. She is a mother of 2, an artist and an art tutor. She lives on a family farm and is passionate about children connecting with nature and learning through creative play.

I originally started my playwork career at Bolton Play and Children Services where I worked for 10 years. I am a Playwork, Early Years and Childcare Trainer, Assessor, IQA. I have run my own business of 8 childcare provisions of Breakfast, Afterschool and Holiday provisions, here in the Northwest.
Melanie Jones
Assessor

I am The Managing Director of my own company, which is a Children’s Soft Play Centre, with an Ofsted Registered Out of School Club called The Beach Hut Play & Party Centre, located in Great Harwood, Lancashire. We have been open for 6 and a half years now. Previous, to opening my business I worked at a local College for 11 years, where My role was to Teach and Assess Learners throughout their Childcare Course and to verify other Tutors’ work. I live in Whalley Lancashire, a 10 minute drive from where my business is located. I enjoy spending time with my family, visiting the gym, going out for meals and building up my business. I have a range of qualifications ie NNEB, A1, V1, Cert. Ed. Level 5 in Leadership & Management to name a few. I am very much looking forward to working with all the new Learners.
