First published in 1957, ‘Adventure in Play’ is a wonderfully evocative account of one of the first adventure playgrounds, funded as part of an experiment by the then National Playing Fields Association (now Fields in Trust). Although written nearly sixty years ago, May’s report details many of the challenges which will be familiar to today’s playworkers, and also raises some interesting questions about adventure playgrounds which are still relevant today.
